【Discipline Introduction】

The Theoretical Economics at Shenzhen University is co-constructed by the School of Economics and the China Research Center for Special Economic Zones. The discipline currently offers a first-level doctoral program, a master's program in Theoretical Economics, and a first-level post-doctoral research station (established in 2012). It is a Guangdong Provincial "Climbing Peak" Key Discipline (2013), approved for the Key Discipline Construction Project of Guangdong High-Level University Construction (2015), and a Key Construction Discipline of the Guangdong "Rush-Improve-Strengthen" Promotion Plan (2018). It is the only liberal arts discipline among the first batch of master's programs (1996), doctoral programs (2006), and post-doctoral stations at Shenzhen University.The School of Economics is the first college at Shenzhen University to have a complete higher education training system (undergraduate, master's, doctoral). Currently, the school has three national first-class professional construction sites in Economics, Finance, and Accounting, providing comprehensive disciplinary support for the cultivation of theoretical economics talents. In 2011, approved by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, the School of Economics became a Guangdong Provincial Talent Training Mode Innovation Experimental Zone.

【Research Directions】

The School of Economics enrolls master's students in Theoretical Economics (0201), and temporarily does not divide specific research directions.

【Research Situation】

The School of Economics currently has 152 faculty members, including 117 full-time teachers: 23 professors, 45 associate professors, and 49 assistant professors and lecturers. Over 88% of the faculty hold doctoral degrees. The vast majority of teachers are PhDs from prestigious domestic and international universities, demonstrating rich teaching experience, strong professionalism, high research capabilities, and international perspectives.

The school has 3,809 students in total, including 2,899 full-time undergraduates, 505 full-time postgraduates, and 405 part-time postgraduates, accounting for approximately one-sixth of the university's total student population. Under the guidance of their supervisors, some postgraduates have published high-level papers in authoritative journals.

From 2018 to 2020, faculty members obtained 2 National Social Science Fund projects, 11 National Natural Science Fund projects, and 21 provincial and ministerial-level projects. Incomplete statistics show that over the past three years, teachers from the school have published more than 210 academic papers in key national journals, including 63 indexed in SCI, 51 in SSCI, and 55 in CSSCI source journals, and have published 16 academic works. The funds received for vertical and horizontal projects undertaken by faculty in the past three years amount to 37.926 million yuan.

【Training Objectives】

This discipline adheres to the concepts of respecting individuality, teaching students in accordance with their aptitudes, encouraging innovation, and promoting open development. It aims to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with solid foundational theories of economics, systematic mastery of Marxist economic theories, comprehensive knowledge with a rational structure, international perspectives, and strong capabilities in innovation and empirical research.

【Employment Situation】

Graduates with a master's degree in this discipline enjoy favorable employment prospects. From 2016 to 2020, the employment rate of master's graduates in this discipline reached 92%. Among employment sectors, the financial industry accounts for the highest proportion (37.74%), followed by computer, communication, and other electronic equipment manufacturing (9.43%), party and government institutions (7.55%), and education & scientific research (7.55%). Employers that graduates have signed with include Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, People's Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Shenzhen High-Tech Investment Group, ZTE Corporation, etc.

Major courses include: History of Economic Thought, Intermediate Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, Institutional Economics, History of China's Reform and Opening-up and Development of Special Economic Zones, Econometrics, Professional English, etc.

【Representative Distinguished Alumni】

Zhong Ruoyu: Graduated with a master's degree in Political Economy in 2001. Currently a Professor and PhD Supervisor at Shenzhen University, he serves as a Standing Committee Member and Vice President (on temporary assignment) of the Party Committee of Shanxi University of Finance and Economics, President of Shenzhen Applied Economics Research Association, Expert of Shenzhen Decision Advisory Committee, and Director of the Population Research Institute at Shenzhen University. He has presided over projects from the National Social Science Fund, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and Guangdong Provincial Humanities and Social Sciences Fund. His work Research on China's Resource Productivity Based on Material Flow Analysis won the First Prize in the Academic Works Category of Shenzhen Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievements.

Chen Pian: Graduated with a master's degree in Political Economy in 2002. As an Economist at Nathan Associates, she is currently employed by a U.S. economic and legal consulting firm, being the first female Chinese economist in the company. She has also served as a Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.

Zhou Xiaoyun: Graduated with a master's degree in Political Economy in 2004. Named as one of the Top Ten Outstanding Youths in Xinyu City, she currently serves as Secretary of the Party Committee and Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Xinyu University, Jiangxi Province (Associate Professor), and Director of the Research Center for Small and Medium Cities. She has presided over research projects for the Ministry of Culture, Department of Education of Jiangxi Province, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Culture, etc., and authored A Study on China's Water Conservancy Construction Thoughts (Pre-Qin to 1919).

Luo Haiping: Graduated with a doctorate in Political Economy in 2010. As a "215 Project" Ganjiang Young Scholar, he is currently an Associate Professor at the Key Base of the Ministry of Education, Nanchang University, and a supervisor of master's students. He has presided over 9 provincial-level and above projects, including those from the National Social Science Fund, Ministry of Education, Jiangxi Province, and National Development and Reform Commission. He has published 3 academic monographs with Shanghai Joint Publishing Company and Economic Science Press, and over 30 papers in CSSCI and above journals.

Wu Fenglan: Graduated with a master's degree in Political Economy in 2005. She is currently a Professor and master's supervisor at the School of Economics, Shenzhen University, and a Council Member of the Guangdong Economic Association. She has published more than 30 papers in journals such as Fiscal Research and Journal of Macau Polytechnic Institute, 2 monographs, and 9 co-edited works. She has undertaken more than 10 national and provincial-level projects, focusing on research directions including special economic zone economy, institutional economics, and public economics.
