【Subject Introduction】

Theoretical economics at Shenzhen University is jointly established by the School of Economics and the Research Center for Special Economic Zones of China. In 1985, the State Education Commission specially approved Shenzhen University to recruit master's degree students in political economy (Special Economic Zone Economy) from all over the country. This discipline currently offers a first-level discipline doctoral and master's program in theoretical economics, and has a first-level discipline postdoctoral research station (2012). It is a key discipline of Guangdong Province's "Peak Climbing" program (2013), and has been approved for the key discipline construction Project of Guangdong Province's High-level University Construction (2015) and the key construction discipline of Guangdong Province's "Catching Up, Strengthening and Upgrading" plan (2018). It is the only liberal arts discipline among the first batch of master's programs (1996), doctoral programs (2006), and postdoctoral research stations of Shenzhen University. The School of Economics is the earliest college in Shenzhen University to have a complete higher education (bachelor's, master's and doctoral) training system. Currently, the school has three national first-class undergraduate major construction points in Economics, Finance and Accounting, which can provide a complete disciplinary support for the cultivation of theoretical economics talents. In 2011, with the approval of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, the School of Economics became an experimental zone for innovative talent cultivation models in Guangdong Province.

【Research Direction】

  1. Political Economy (Economics of Special Economic Zones)

This discipline has been carried out simultaneously with the establishment and development of China's special economic zones. In 1983, when Shenzhen University was founded, the "Institute of Special Economic Zone Economics" was established. In 1995, it was renamed the "Institute of Special Economic Zone, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Economics", which was an important basis for the Ministry of Education's approval of the "Liberal Arts Base" in 2001. This discipline is the only liberal arts discipline among the first batch of master's programs (1996), doctoral programs (2006), and postdoctoral research stations of Shenzhen University. It has been a provincial key discipline since 1991. This discipline, in combination with China's reform and opening up, especially the practice of special economic zones, mainly focuses on the study of the theoretical system of China's political economy and the formation of the theoretical system of the socialist market economy. It strives to explore the theoretical mechanism of China's institutional change and has distinct "characteristics of The Times" and "Chinese features".

2.The history of Economic Thought

This discipline studies Chinese and foreign economic thoughts, with a focus on the formation, development and evolution of contemporary Chinese economic thoughts on the basis of comparisons between China and foreign countries. That is, within the scope of contemporary intellectual history, taking the research on the economic thought history of China's reform and opening up as the main line, sort out and study the historical context of the formation of Chinese political economy and the theory of socialist market economy. The academic team has undertaken major projects of the National Social Science Foundation in this regard, and its research level has always been at the forefront in the academic circle.

3.Economic History (History of China's Reform and Opening Up)

This discipline is guided by Marxism and employs economic analysis methods to study the structure and historical process of economic development, the development and evolution process of economic organizations, economic systems and economic sectors, and the interrelationship between economic and non-economic factors. Through the comparison of the economic development history of various civilizations, countries and nations, it scientifically understands economic historical phenomena. Explore the universal and specific laws of economic development, and apply the history of economics to study current economic issues, so as to serve China's economic development, expand reform and opening up, and develop foreign economic ties. The research on the history of China's reform and opening up and the development history of China's special economic zones is a distinctive feature of this direction. Its team not only undertakes major projects of the National Social Science Foundation but also has published a series of monographs that have a huge influence both at home and abroad. It has certain academic discourse power in this discipline and is in a leading position in research.

4.Western Economics

This discipline mainly studies the operation of market mechanisms, economic growth theories and the comparison of economic systems. As the location, Shenzhen, is a region in China where the level of economic marketization development is relatively high and economic activities are active, and it is also the birthplace and experimental site of China's economic system change, it enjoys favorable timing and geographical advantages. This direction has carried out research on major theoretical and practical issues regarding the market economy mechanism and operation relatively early. The theoretical and practical research on the fundamental and cutting-edge issues of economic growth theory and regional economic development, as well as the research on the paths of institutional transition and institutional change, has achieved relatively fruitful research results.

5.World economy

This discipline mainly studies the operational performance and mechanism changes of the global economy, which is moving towards globalization and regional economic integration in contemporary times. It complements economics, political science and management, etc., and provides decision-making basis for establishing a fair and reasonable new international economic order and expanding and strengthening economic and trade relations among countries and regions around the world on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

6.Population, Resources and Environmental Economics

This discipline is located in a special economic zone and adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, enjoying particular convenience in researching the economy, population and resources under open conditions. From the perspective of "institution - structure - technology", this paper studies the synergy and evolution of the economy, resources, population and environment in China, especially in the Pearl River Delta, as well as a series of resource utilization and intellectual property rights through local equilibrium, providing theoretical support for achieving transformation and development.

【Teaching staff】

The School of Economics currently has 152 faculty and staff members. There are 117 full-time teachers, including 23 professors, 45 associate professors, 49 assistant professors and lecturers. More than 88% of the teachers have a doctoral degree. The vast majority of the teachers are PHDS from prestigious universities at home and abroad, possessing rich teaching experience, a strong sense of dedication, a high level of research capabilities and an international perspective. The college currently has 2,899 full-time undergraduate students, 505 full-time postgraduate students and 405 part-time postgraduate students, totaling 3,809 students, accounting for approximately one sixth of the total student population of the university.

【Scientific research situation】

Some postgraduate students have published high-level papers in authoritative journals under the guidance of their supervisors. From 2018 to 2020, the teachers of the college obtained 2 projects of the National Social Science Foundation, 11 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation and 21 provincial and ministerial-level projects. According to incomplete statistics, in the past three years, the teachers of the college have published over 210 academic papers in important national journals, among which 63 are indexed by SCI, 51 by SSCI, and 55 by CSSCI source journals. They have also published 16 books. In the past three years, the college's teachers have received a total of 37.926 million yuan in funds for vertical and horizontal research projects.

【Training Objectives】

This discipline adheres to the concepts of respecting individuality, teaching students in accordance with their aptitudes, encouraging innovation, and open development. It aims to cultivate compound talents with a solid foundation in economic theories and skills, a systematic grasp of Marxist economic theories, comprehensive knowledge, a reasonable structure, an international perspective, and strong innovation and empirical research capabilities. The major courses include: "History of Economic Thought", "Intermediate Macroeconomics and Microeconomics", "Institutional Economics", "History of China's Reform and Opening Up and Development of Special Economic Zones", "Econometrics", "Professional English", etc.

【Employment situation】

The employment prospects for master's graduates in this discipline are promising. The employment rate of master's graduates in this discipline reached 92% from 2016 to 2020. Among the employment industries, the financial industry accounts for the highest proportion (37.74%), followed by the computer, communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing industry (9.43%), Party and government organs and public institutions (7.55%), and education and scientific research (7.55%). The signing units include the Guangdong Academy of Social Sciences, the People's Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Shenzhen High-tech Investment Group, ZTE Corporation, etc.

  6. Zhou Xiaoyun graduated with a master's degree in political economy in 2004. She is one of the top ten outstanding young people in Xinyu City. Currently, she serves as the Party Secretary and Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Xinyu University in Jiangxi Province, an associate professor, and the Director of the Research Center for the Development of Small and Medium-sized Cities.
